The website received awards for work published in 2016, including top honors for a theme issue about a refugee ministry in Houston and for in-depth coverage after the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando.
First-place winner “Who is my neighbor?” is a collection of stories, videos and other resources about the Westbury Apartment Ministry in Houston, Texas. The judges said it was “clearly a 21st century integration of technology and journalism, with energy jumping off each story. Great video complements written pieces.”
In addition, the main article for that collection, written by Faith & Leadership associate editor Bob Wells, won second place for feature writing.
The judges also gave first place to “There is gospel to preach here,” in which Faith & Leadership asked 12 Christian leaders in a variety of settings to write about their response to the shooting at Pulse nightclub, which left 49 people dead.
The comments from the judges noted that “this package offers an interesting blueprint on how churches should respond to an act of evil in our country, and in this particular case the horrific mass shooting at Pulse nightclub in Orlando.”
A video about a liturgical candle maker in New Hampshire called “’Be the bee’: The beehive as a metaphor for life in Christian community,” won second place in the video category.
Faith & Leadership also won second place for general excellence in the online/website category.
